Kingston council to apply for exemption to new 'unrealistic' default speed limits on SA beaches

A South Australian council will apply for an exemption to newly introduced default beach speed limits, claiming some of its beaches are treated as unsealed roads and the new 40kph limit is impractical. Key points: New beach speed limits of 40kph were introduced in SA last week, down from 100kph One council in the state's south east believes some of its beaches should be exempt from the lower speeds Kingston District Council says some of its beaches are treated like unsealed roads, stretching for a considerable distance The state government put forward new rules for beach drivers last week with speed restrictions of 40kph, and 25kph when driving within 50 metres of a person. Kingston District Council chief executive officer Nat Traeger said speeds should be higher on some stretches of beach in her area. "We have not yet received a request from Kingston District Council, or any other council across the state, to raise the default speed limit on beaches," the spokesperson said.
