Retail sales hurt by bushfire crisis, but no sign of coronavirus yet
ABCAustralia's summer bushfire crisis has led to a rough start to the year for retailers but the coronavirus has shown "no apparent impact" so far, according to the latest official figures. Key points: Bushfires were the main reason for retail sales dropping 0.3pc in January It comes after a weak December, with the ABS revising the result to an even lower -0.7pc The coronavirus has not significantly affected the official retail figures yet Retail turnover slipped by a worse-than-expected 0.3 per cent in January, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Statistics reported. This includes "the continued unwind of a pull-forward in sales associated with the 'Black Friday' sales event in late November and early December," said Westpac senior economist Matthew Hassan. "It's possible that panic buying of essential household items boosted food, pharmaceutical and toiletry sales, but we estimate that they account for just 14 per cent of consumption," said Capital Economics' senior economist Marcel Thieliant.
