DPCC to monitor Yamuna pollution in real time
Twenty-two online monitoring stations are likely to be installed along the Yamuna by the year-end, allowing the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to get real-time data on water quality of the river, officials of the pollution watchdog said. At present, Delhi collects water samples from the Yamuna manually once a month, from seven to eight locations, analysis of which is published by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee in a monthly report. A copy of the tender, seen by HT, said the stations should be able to measure water flow into the Yamuna, calculate pH and temperature, and assess conductivity, besides measuring pollutants, including BOD, chemical oxygen demand, TSS, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, ammonia and dissolved oxygen. A monitoring committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal found that a 22-km stretch of the Yamuna, falling in Delhi, contributes to around 76% of the water’s total pollution.
