
T.N.’s policy seeks to streamline rescue-to-social reintegration of homeless persons with mental illness
The HinduFormulating a comprehensive policy for addressing the needs of homeless persons with mental illness, Tamil Nadu is aiming at ensuring holistic care for HPWMI, starting with their rescue to social reintegration, streamlining the various processes involved and defining the role of the stakeholders. The Tamil Nadu State Policy for Care of Homeless Persons with Mental Illness and Implementation Framework - 2024, which was released on Thursday, outlines four levels of care for HPWMI - Rescue and Acute Care, Intermediary Care, Long Term care and Social Reintegration with contribution in each level by the stakeholders. As of now, information about homeless persons suspected to have mental illness comes through various helpline numbers across different departments including 100, 102, 104, 14416 and district counselling centres mobile helpline numbers and 181. The policy has outlined detailed steps including FIR registration, emergency care and medical assessment and referral protocols involving various stakeholders such as police, health services, NGOs and local authorities.
