WA's emergency warnings have changed. Here's how the new system works

ABC

Western Australia's emergency warning system has been revamped to bring it into line with other states and territories and provide consistency between warnings for bushfires, cyclones, floods, storms and heatwaves. "People will now see the issuing of a cyclone advice, or a cyclone watch and act, or a cyclone emergency warning with relevant action statements with that warning to really call to action what community needs to do," Superintendent Gardiner said. Rather than issuing an "all clear" alert after the cyclone has passed, DFES will scale the warning level back down to a "cyclone advice" until the threat has ceased. "Removing the "all clear" allows us to really articulate the level of risk and ongoing risks post the passage of a cyclone," Superintendent Gardiner said. The cyclone advice will include specific action statements about the ongoing risks once the cyclone has passed, such as "threat is reduced" and "return with caution".
