EVs above Rs 30 lakh to get more expensive in Maharashtra with additional 6% tax

The Maharashtra government has proposed an additional 6% tax on electric vehicles priced above Rs 30 lakh in the state. According to data from the industry body Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, electric cars made up only 3% of the total cars sold in India in February 2025. However, Tesla might not be impacted as its maiden electric car for the Indian market might be priced below Rs 30 lakh. The Maharashtra government's decision to implement a 6% additional tax on EVs is most likely to impact mass segment players like Hyundai, Kia and BYD as they offer electric cars with ex-showroom prices in the north of Rs 30 lakh.
