A Confederate monument that helped spark a violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, has been hoisted off its stone pedestal. Key points: The removal of the statues was held up by a lawsuit and a law that was amended in 2020 There have been 10 expressions of interest from organisations wanting to acquire the statues Charlottesville Mayor Nikuyah Walker said the removal will help the US understand its past A crane removed the statue of General Robert E Lee four years after white supremacists and neo-Nazis organised protests against the removal. As long as the statues "remain standing in our downtown public spaces, they signal that our community tolerated white supremacy and the lost cause these generals fought for," the coalition Take 'Em Down Cville said. Statues' removal a long time coming Only the statues of Lee and Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson would be removed for now, the city council said.
