Tesla criticised for opening showroom in China’s Xinjiang region
Al JazeeraTesla’s announcement that it has opened a showroom in Xinjiang has attracted criticism from American rights and trade groups, making it the latest foreign firm caught up in tensions related to the far-western Chinese region. The US electric car maker announced the showroom’s opening in Xinjiang’s regional capital, Urumqi, on its official Weibo account last Friday. “Elon Musk must close Tesla’s Xinjiang showroom,” the Council on American-Islamic Relations said on its official Twitter account, referring to Tesla’s founder. Although some have been trying to reduce their supply chain exposure to the region, especially as Washington bans imports such as Xinjiang cotton or blacklists Chinese companies that it says have aided Beijing’s policy there, many foreign brands operate stores there.
