Vaikunta Ekadasi message

The Hindu

All of us pray to God every day for two things. The ladder signifies devotion to God, climbing which is rendered possible by leading a life of virtue, while the snake symbolises ego that pulls one down in all one’s endeavours, most of all God-quest. The legend behind Vaikunta Ekadasi is also one of ego and ultimate surrender to the Lord. Upon hearing the prayers of the devas, Vishnu waged war on Muran who had already secured a boon whereby even Vishnu’s powerful chakra would cause him no harm. The day came to be celebrated as Vaikunta Ekadasi, with Vishnu granting Ekadasi’s wish that anyone fasting, forgoing sleep, chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam, singing bhajans and surrendering to Him be granted heaven.
