First Bird Flu Death In US: 66-Yr-Old Dies Of H5N1 Virus As US Gears Up To Contain Spread

Bird Flu: A US man aged 66 has died after battling a bird flu infection for almost three weeks, the country’s apex health body, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has reported. The US health authority states that while the death from H5N1 bird flu is tragic, it is not unexpected because of the known potential for infection with these viruses to cause severe illness and death. The CDC reports that, as of January 6, 2025, there have been 66 confirmed human cases of H5N1 bird flu in the United States since 2024 and 67 since 2022. Outside the United States, more than 950 cases of H5N1 bird flu have been reported to the World Health Organization; about half of those have resulted in death, the CDC noted. The H5N1 strain of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus, or bird flu, had infected 65 humans in 10 states of the US by the end of December 2024.
