Clement Lenglet – a sensible solution to Aston Villa’s defensive problem

Two former Europa League winners and a La Liga champion walk in… No, it is not the setup to a cheap joke. Clement Lenglet, capped 15 times for France, is the latest addition to Emery’s centre-back cohort, sharing, like the rest of them and Villa’s summer signings, vast European experience. Lenglet largely competed for a spot on the left of Antonio Conte’s back three with Ben Davies and in some ways suffered from not being the player the manager and supporters hoped would sign. He enhanced Barcelona’s level of control in games they were expected to dominate, with his left-footed distribution from defence opening passing lanes and feeding play towards left-back Jordi Alba, who occupied positions high and wide. Even in a floundering Spurs side, Lenglet’s distribution represents an upgrade to Villa’s centre-back options, with the exception of Torres.
