Al JazeeraUS side focused on security, women’s rights and evacuations while Taliban called for international recognition and an end to sanctions. Delegates from the Taliban and the United States have held “candid and professional” talks in the Qatari capital, according to a US official, with the two-day discussions focusing on security and “terrorism” concerns, the rights of women and girls as well as evacuations from Afghanistan. “The US delegation focused on security and terrorism concerns and safe passage for US citizens, other foreign nationals and our Afghan partners, as well as on human rights, including the meaningful participation of women and girls in all aspects of Afghan society,” he said. “The two sides also discussed the United States’ provision of robust humanitarian assistance, directly to the Afghan people.” Al Jazeera’s Natasha Ghoneim, reporting from Doha, said that the Taliban delegation had described the two-day talks as “positive”. The US officials said the talks were a continuation of “pragmatic engagements” with the Taliban and “not about granting recognition or conferring legitimacy” to the group.
