Boeing's troubled Starliner capsule returns to Earth empty, leaving astronauts waiting on International Space Station

Boeing's first astronaut mission has concluded with an empty capsule landing and two test pilots still in space, left stranded until next year because NASA judged their return on the defective capsule too risky. "She's on her way home," Ms Williams radioed as the white-and-blue-trimmed capsule undocked from the space station 420 kilometres over China and disappeared into the black void. There were some snags during re-entry, including more thruster issues, but Starliner made a "bullseye landing," said NASA's commercial crew program manager Steve Stich. Flight controllers conducted more test firings of the capsule's thrusters after it undocked from the ISS, with one failing to ignite, despite NASA Mission Control calling the undocking a "perfect" departure.
