Wolves must remember this: Taking risks is a virtue in football, not a sin

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ principal problem did not start with Julen Lopetegui. The issue was highlighted starkly on Saturday at Nottingham Forest when the only positive for Wolves from a desperately worrying performance was the point they got thanks to Daniel Podence’s sixth goal of the season. Wolves’ possession share of 72.4 per cent was their highest in any Premier League game this season, yet their expected goals figure of 0.49 was their second lowest. So expected goals are not a perfect method of measuring a team’s potency, but the model is widely regarded as a clear, useful guide to the quality of chances created and Wolves’ figure at the City Ground, in the biggest game of the season to date, was paltry.
