Boris Johnson must provide clarity on Huawei 5G alternatives, says HPE boss
The TelegraphStripping Huawei equipment out of the UK’s 5G networks won’t damage the roll-out of the technology as long as the Government provides clear guidance, according to the managing director of HPE. “The reality of 5G … is that there will be more options for supply, not less, and consequently fewer reasons to include potentially unsafe technology in UK networks,” Mr Waters wrote. Vodafone warned earlier this week that any Government decision to entirely remove Huawei technology from the country’s 5G networks could seriously undermine the UK’s lead in the launch of the technology. Scott Petty, the chief technology officer of Vodafone UK, told the Financial Times that “the UK’s leadership in 5G will be lost if mobile operators are forced to spend time and money replacing existing equipment.” The National Cyber Security Centre, part of spy agency GCHQ, is currently carrying out an emergency review examining whether new US sanctions blocking Huawei’s use of US-designed components could reduce the security of Huawei technology.
