Punjab BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal protest against Chandigarh land allotment to Haryana
India TodayA fresh political row has erupted over Chandigarh's status as the capital shared between Punjab and Haryana. The recent allocation of land to Haryana has stirred strong opposition among Punjab leaders, who argue that the move undermines Punjab’s long-held claim over Chandigarh as its capital, a claim supported by the fact that nearly 30 villages in Punjab were acquired to establish Chandigarh. Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to reconsider the land allocation decision. Jakhar also criticised Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, claiming that his support for Haryana’s request during a meeting of the Northern Zonal Council in Jaipur weakened Punjab's claim. The Shiromani Akali Dal joined the outcry, with senior leader and former minister Daljit Cheema condemning the land allocation as a "conspiracy against Punjab and Punjabis".
