Peace talks on with Imphal valley-based underground group: Manipur Chief Minister
India TodayThe Manipur government is in the advanced stage of peace negotiations with a major Imphal valley-based insurgent group, Chief Minister N Biren Singh confirmed on Sunday. It is the first time that any valley-based proscribed organisation entered peace negotiations with the government since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3. A number of hill-based underground organisations are already under Suspension of Operations with the Indian government, but it is the first time that any valley-based underground organisation agreed to come to peace talks with the state government. When asked about the newspapers going off stands and local TV channels off the air in Imphal over the last three days, the Chief Minister said he came to know about it on Saturday.
