Centre using CBI to destabilise govt.: TMC

The West Bengal government and the ruling Trinamool Congress on Monday told the Supreme Court that the “ruling government at the Centre” was using the CBI as a “tool” to destabilise the Mamata Banerjee government in the guise of investigating the multi-crore Saradha scam. Thakur that the Supreme Court monitor the probe conducted by the CBI so as to ensure that the investigation was “fair, without political ill-will and inspires confidence in the people of West Bengal.” The apex court had in its judgment on May 9, 2014 directed the State police to transfer cases registered in the chit scam to the CBI, giving the premier agency a free hand, instead of monitoring the premier agency’s probe. “The CBI’s so-called ‘investigation’ is directed towards victimising and destabilising the party leadership and in the guise thereof, further the political propaganda of the BJP,” Mahua Moitra, general secretary, West Bengal Trinamool Congress, contended in a separate application on behalf of the party. Ms. Moitra said her party is the fourth largest in the Lok Sabha with 34 seats, and alleged that the CBI was only furthering the “ulterior motives of their political masters.” “Functionaries of the ruling Central government and its political party, more specifically, Shri Amit Shah, National President of BJP, Shri Rahul Sinha, General Secretary, West Bengal BJP and Shri Siddharth Nath Singh, BJP in-charge of Bengal, regularly release press statements and threats which are diligently carried out by the CBI in tune with the political agenda of the ruling party,” Ms. Moitra contended in her application, seeking impleadment as a party in the case before the Supreme Court.
