Ousted Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi jailed for a further seven years after final corruption trial
ABCA court in military-ruled Myanmar has found the country's ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi guilty of corruption and sentenced her to seven years in prison, in the last of a string of criminal cases against her, a legal official said. Key points: Aung San Suu Kyi's other convictions had left her with a total sentence of 26 years The most recent corruption case centred around the use of a helicopter Ms Suu Kyi is expected to appeal in the coming days The sentence means she faces a total of 33 years in prison following a series of politically tinged prosecutions since the army toppled her elected government in February 2021. The UN announced after its special envoy Noeleen Heyzer met Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the head of Myanmar's military-installed government in August, that he "expressed openness to arranging a meeting at the right time" between her and Ms Suu Kyi. Suu Kyi detained after landslide election win Ms Suu Kyi, the daughter of Myanmar's martyred independence hero General Aung San, spent almost 15 years as a political prisoner under house arrest between 1989 and 2010.
