UNDERSTATEMENT | Mumbai showstopper buffet

Till not very long back, Mumbai’s Lakme Fashion Week would get its share of caustic reviews for the Bollywood stars it netted as showstoppers every season. ‘Celebrity Fashion Week’ said others, defining the event’s alter ego, laying a fat slice of the blame at designer Manish Malhotra’s doorstep for getting the Kareenas, the Karishmas, the Kajols and the Katrinas doing the catwalk for him. While Delhi’s Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week also gets its share of Mumbai celebs, especially whoever is releasing their next film, the recent couture week in the capital and the Aamby Valley Bridal Week blurred the fine line, if one existed, between Mumbai and Delhi’s way of presenting fashion. But earlier this month, when actor Tabu became couturier Anju Modi’s Draupadi at the PCJ Delhi Couture Week and more recently, usually overdressed actor Kirron Kher became the showstopper for designer Gaurang at LFW and Mumbai’s ad guru, Prahlad Kakkar, the voice of reason and unreason walked for designer Shravan Kumar also at LFW, I have a rekindled interest in this showstopper business.
