UK police able to solve only one in 10 cases of violent and sexual crimes: Report
FirstpostData from the Crown Prosecution Service shows that the number of alleged rape victims withdrawing from prosecutions before trial has more than doubled in the past five years. Fewer than one in 10 cases involving the most severe violent and sexual offences were resolved in hundreds of crime hotspots across England and Wales in 2024, British media reported on Monday. Official figures reveal that nearly 1.9 million violent or sexual crimes in the country were closed without a suspect being caught or charged in the year leading up to June 2024, representing about 89% of all offences with an outcome. According to an analysis by The Guardian, in the year to June 2024, only 11% of violent and sexual offence cases in England and Wales were resolved with a suspect being caught or charged, roughly half the proportion seen seven years earlier. According to the report, stark regional disparities have emerged in solving violent and sexual crimes across England and Wales with urban forces faring worse than regions with fewer offences.
