A 22-year-old Launceston man was "tortured, suffocated and waterboarded" before his death in 2017 because of claims he had stolen a car, a Supreme Court jury has heard. The court heard Mr Jones offered a $5,000 reward for his car and was soon informed by numerous people that Mr Breward had been seen driving it. Girlfriend offered money for information Jurors were told they would hear evidence throughout the trial that Mr Jones and Mr Izard then went "searching" for a mine shaft to place the body down, but ended up buying a life raft from Kmart and used it to dump Mr Breward's body in a lake. Mr Jones' defence lawyer Greg Richardson said while many of the facts of the case would not be disputed, including that Mr Jones' car was stolen and that he and Mr Izard went to the Newnham unit to confront Mr Breward the day he died, the "issue" of the case was the accusation of murder.
