Could the Robert Fico shooting lead to a wider conflict in Europe?
The IndependentWhat was clearly an attempt to assassinate the Slovak prime minister has prompted myriad theories as to why, and what the repercussions might be. Robert Fico, who became Slovakia’s prime minister for the third time after his party gained the most votes in last autumn’s general election, is on record as saying that he feared an attack. For all the West’s condemnation of Fico as a “populist”, his policies as prime minister have been constrained by the limitations of coalition government. One aspect of the attempt on the Slovak prime minister’s life could warrant wider concern, however. If, as the Slovak authorities said on the day after the attack on Fico, his would-be assassin was a “lone wolf” – albeit one with an as yet undefined political agenda – the probability is that this attempt on the Slovak PM’s life will remain a Slovak atrocity.
