Kerala opts for huge WB loan for initiative to improve health system
The HinduThe State Cabinet has approved the implementation of the Kerala Health System Improvement Programme under the Health department by taking a loan to the tune of ₹2,424.28 crore from the World Bank. The programme aims at building a resilient health system capable of tackling all emerging health issues while addressing the evolving demographic and epidemiological problems in the State. Goals of programme Some of the goals of the programme are developing an ecosystem which will help reduce infectious diseases; preparing the health system to respond to new health challenges in a confident manner; improving trauma care and emergency medicine by creating an efficient network of emergency care facilities, including ambulance service and a trauma registry which function round the clock; augmenting the care of the elderly by involving local self-government institutions; improving human resources in health and its efficiency; universalising digital health applications and enhancing healthcare investment. Additional burden However, the emerging health challenges, inadequate public health investment and increasing morbidity due to non-communicable diseases, fuelled by unhealthy lifestyles, have all been creating an additional burden on the State’s health system.
