Row over speaker invite for JNU event
The HinduThe faculty of Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Centre for Economic Studies and Planning has decided to invite Ashoka University Vice-Chancellor Pratap Bhanu Mehta as speaker for the 26th Krishna Bharadwaj Memorial Lecture in the last week of March. However, this year’s event finds itself mired in controversy after the Dean of the School of Social Sciences allegedly bypassed the centre’s choice of speaker, invited a different speaker and announced it as the Krishna Bharadwaj Memorial Lecture. In a statement, the faculty said, “.The lecture that has been announced as the 26th Krishna Bharadwaj Memorial Lecture by the Dean School of Social Sciences is not the lecture that the CESP organises every year. This is an event being held without the involvement or sanction of the CESP.” Rights activist and Chhattisgarh High Court advocate Sudha Bharadwaj, who is also Prof Bharadwaj’s daughter, has declined to attend the lecture in which Mr. Mehta was replaced as choice of speaker.
