Roundtable: What will the 2021 Cup schedule look like?

There are still 15 races remaining in the 2019 season — 10 of which are playoff events that will decide the championship — and there is still all of 2020. That’s not a surprise considering FOX Sports and NBC Sports have contracts in place to televise Cup races through 2024, and any reduction to the schedule also means NASCAR would have to refund a portion of the record $6.8 billion contract money it is receiving. With an increased number of road course races, we’re diminishing the value of good oval racers and putting greater emphasis on drivers with road racing ability. But while enthusiasm for the concept is strong, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer Steve O’Donnell told The Athletic there is concern about having too many tracks with Cup races on consecutive days as it could dilute the appeal. O’Donnell’s apprehension is understandable, though are a few tracks that could benefit from jam-packed weekend schedule featuring two Cup races, along with an Xfinity and Truck Series race.
