Lobby countries who use death penalty, urges Supreme Court judge

ABC

LEIGH SALES, PRESENTER: The use of the death penalty around the world is something that most Australians only think about when one of our nationals is affected. LEX LASRY: Yes, I'd like to see a group established, perhaps an eminent persons group, established by the Australian Government, whose job it is - is to in effect establish a strategy so that the Australian Government can have discussions, make submissions, make representations to other governments, including Indonesia, China, the United States or the state governments in the United States about the death penalty without being under the pressure of an imminent execution. LEX LASRY: Well I would see that a group like this or people like this would be making direct representations to governments in countries like Indonesia to persuade them logically to the view that they should reconsider the use of a death penalty. LEIGH SALES: If we were to have group of Australians who were to lobby foreign governments, is there an issue around consistency in that when Australians are up for execution, there's a great deal of protest, but at other times, say, for example when the Bali bombers are up for execution, people are generally quite happy to see them killed?
