Would the Queen ever abdicate for the next in line to the throne?
ABCElizabeth II has been a steady and even predictable global figure since becoming Queen 70 years ago next year. Next in line for the British throne is, of course, Prince Charles, the Queen's eldest child. In one of her earliest public speeches to mark her 21st birthday in 1947, the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth and first in line to inherit the throne from her father King George VI, declared "my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service". Privately, the Queen is said to have told her cousin, Margaret Rhodes, that she would never abdicate "unless I get Alzheimer's or have a stroke", and told the former archbishop of Canterbury George Cary that: "I'm going to carry on to the end." In this case, Prince Charles would step into the role of Prince Regent to carry out all the Queen's essential duties until the time she passed away and he formally succeeds her as monarch.
