Game-Based Learning: How board and digital games are changing education

A video of a social science teacher went viral almost a year ago for using Assassin’s Creed, a computer game, to teach history. The game, “Pralay,” is a board game Hegde and team created to teach not just about the doomsday facts of climate change but also to educate the player about the various political strategies involved in mitigating the challenges. “The goal of the player is to become the president of Prapanch’s world government by taking climate-related decisions to get as many Janta favour them” says Ms. Hegde. For online and screen games, he believes, “there is a different crowd, and it is expensive to develop as well.” He kicked off a board game inspired by the classic snake and ladder game to educate the players about snakes and snake bites. In the board game, the player faces challenges due to climate change.
