Qantas warns staff to brace for standdowns if lockdowns continue
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has warned staff to brace for the potential of renewed stand downs, as closed borders and lockdowns smash domestic travel. Key points: Mr Joyce says flights are now below 40 per cent of pre-COVID levels Unions are calling for JobKeeper to be reinstated However, the TWU says Qantas has already received at least $2 billion in taxpayer support In an email to its staff, the airline said it was running around 90 per cent of pre-COVID capacity before Sydney's lockdown took that to around 60 per cent. Now, adding in the Victorian and South Australian lockdowns, the Qantas boss said the airline had reduced domestic capacity to less than 40 per cent of what it was pre-COVID. Ms Gaske said that 78 per cent of Qantas workers were totally reliant on JobKeeper during last year's lockdown, and 72 per cent said they would not have been able to support their families without the payment.
