NSW Health warns first cases of locally transmitted monkeypox may have happened

NSW Health has warned the state may have seen the first cases of monkeypox being caught through local transmission. Key points: NSW has recorded 11 cases of monkeypox Monkeypox is a rare viral infection previously associated with travel to Central and West Africa Many of the cases are men who have sex with men Eleven cases of monkeypox have now been identified in the state. NSW Health's Jeremy McAnulty said people needed to be on alert for monkeypox symptoms now local transmission may be occurring, especially among men who have sex with men. "People need to be aware of the symptoms of monkeypox, which can include fever, headache, body aches and a rash or lesions on the genital area," Dr McAnulty said.
