This GOP Lawmaker Denounced QAnon—and Fears for His Party
WiredElected officials love to say they aren’t typical politicians. A businessman, former Air Force intelligence officer, and expert on Bigfoot believers, Riggleman has repeatedly refused to bow to party orthodoxy since being elected in 2018, most notably when he officiated a same-sex marriage ceremony last year. More recently, Riggleman has become one of the most outspoken Republican critics of QAnon, the online community organized loosely around the conspiracy theory that Donald Trump is waging a secret war against deep-state pedophiles and satanists. In June, local GOP officials, who had already censured him for “abandoning party principles,” replaced the traditional public primary with an unusual drive-through convention, in which Riggleman lost the nomination to a more conservative candidate. Riggleman recently spoke to WIRED about QAnon and the future of the Republican Party, and he didn’t sound optimistic.
