Can Bhutan's plans for a 'mindfulness city' convince its diaspora community to come home?

ABC

When Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck recently unveiled ambitious plans to develop a new "mindfulness city" at Gelephu, on the country's southern border with India, he cited Bhutanese living overseas as an inspiration. Bunty Avieson, a University of Sydney academic who specialises in media and Bhutan, said the king's announcement was much-anticipated and had been met with "great excitement" in Bhutan and with the diaspora. As to whether it could reverse the "brain drain", Dr Ugyel said the main push factor driving Bhutanese to Australia was the lack of economic opportunities in their home country. Mr Kipchu said the Gelephu mindfulness city was a "very adventurous, ambitious but very positive project" and the kind of initiative that made him want to return to Bhutan.
