Lowering LDL 'bad' cholesterol can reduce dementia risk: Study

Lowering levels of bad cholesterol in the blood could reduce the risk of dementia by 26%, according to a study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry. Researchers from South Korea found that people with low levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, commonly known as bad cholesterol, had a lower risk of developing dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. Previous research has linked high cholesterol to an increased risk of dementia, but this study suggests that lowering LDL-C may have protective effects. While more research is needed, the findings suggest that managing cholesterol through lifestyle changes or medication could help protect brain health and reduce the risk of dementia.
