The EU risks running out of steam over sanctions on Russian oil and gas
The TelegraphThe European Union is showing worrying signs of reverting to type after it surprised the world, and perhaps even itself, with its unified response to the war in Ukraine. Brussels has hit Moscow with four rounds of sanctions on 877 oligarchs and Russian officials, including Vladimir Putin, and 62 businesses, airlines, banks and other entities. EU sanctions require the unanimous support of all 27 member states, which is why the bloc has been criticised as slow and ineffectual when faced with international crises. Member states are divided over whether to expand EU sanctions to hit Russian oil and gas. Russia supplies the EU with 40 per cent of its gas, with countries such as Germany and Italy particularly dependent on supplies, and about a quarter of its crude oil.
