How a Gujarat village on India-Pakistan border is spreading the light with solar empowerment

An Indian village near the Pakistan border in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district has secured uninterrupted power supply by installing rooftop solar panels to generate electricity under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Magniram Rawal, sarpanch of the Madhapura Masali group gram panchayat, and village leaders said the problem of electricity in the village has been permanently solved. Modhera in Mehsana district became the first Gujarat village to be solar-powered in 2022, two years before the rooftop solar policy was announced by the Narendra Modi government. Around 1,350 houses of the total 1,700 in the village were installed with rooftop photovoltaic panels of 1 KW capacity.
