Cops' photo on Sabarimala sacred steps sparks row, senior officer orders inquiry

India Today

A photo of 28 Kerala police personnel posing on the hallowed 18 steps, called ‘Pathinettampadi’ of the Sabarimala temple triggered widespread outrage among devotees and Hindu organisations. The incident took place on Sunday, after the deployment of the first batch of police officers stationed at ‘Sannidhanam’, the holy shrine, ended. The 18 steps hold immense symbolic and spiritual importance in Sabarimala rituals, with devotees approaching them with deep reverence. Hindu organisations demanded a formal apology from the police, stressing the need for better awareness of temple traditions amongst officials posted at the shrine.
