CJI impeachment notice rejected: Know all about the appointment and removal process of a SC Judge

On April 23, Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu rejected the impeachment notice against the CJI Deepak Misra signed by 64 opposition MPs. The committee should consist of the chief justice or a judge of the Supreme Court, a chief justice of a high court, and a distinguished jurist. The chief justice is appointed by the president after consultation with such judges of the Supreme Court and high courts as he deems necessary. The other judges are appointed by the president after consultation with the chief justice and such other judges of the Supreme Court and high courts as he deems necessary. Under the 99th Constitutional Amendment Act of 2014, the government replaced the collegium system of appointing the judges to the Supreme Court and the high courts with a new body called National Judicial Appointment Commission but in 2015, Supreme Court declared the National Judicial Appointment Commission Act as unconstitutional and void, thus scrapping the amendment.
