New York TimesLOS ANGELES — Rory McIlroy is being heckled. Now at @TheAthletic – every number and note to know heading into the 123rd #USOpen – *A first at the US Open since 1947 *Scheffler's historic tee-to-green season *Winner trends to follow *Plus notes on Rory, Rahm, Brooks, Homa and more:https://t.co/mj8FqKUG3e — Justin Ray June 13, 2023 These are the traits that made McIlroy the face and ambassador of the PGA Tour in its “war” against LIV Golf. The PGA Tour plans to join forces with the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, and McIlroy was left in the dark until the final moments — despite throwing his entire reputation into PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan’s fight. He was then placed in front of a microphone the next day at last week’s Canadian Open like a self-described “sacrificial lamb” and “feeling like I’ve put myself out there and this is what happens.” But what comes next for McIlroy? Two months ago in Augusta, McIlroy walked down the second fairway during the second round and a fan shouted, “Keep fighting the good fight, Rory!” McIlroy kept walking and slightly chuckled to himself, this elite golfer trying to finally win a green jacket while carrying the public weight of the golf world on his shoulders.
