Gravity becomes a reality: Watch the terrifying moment an 'astronaut' spins out of the ISS The 'astronaut' was a defunct spacesuit dubbed SuitSat-1 launched in 2006 The suit contained three batteries, a radio transmitter and internal sensors It broadcast transmissions in six languages to amateur radio operators around the world before burning up in Earth's atmosphere As the International Space Station spins around the Earth, a door unexpectedly opens and a figure in a Russian spacesuit is thrown out. Back in 2006, Nasa astronauts launched one of their ‘colleagues’ from the International Space Station to orbit Earth for seven months before burning up in the atmosphere. The scene looks like something from the film Gravity, but the event happened in real life less than a decade ago THE CONTENTS OF SUITSAT-1 The idea for SuitSat was first conceived by the ARISS-Russia team, led by Sergey Samburov. Embedded in the Russian Orlon Space Suit were two boxes housing ham radio transmitter and the micro-controller that played back the digital voice and video recordings.
