$750 million federal cash splash to boost regional internet speeds and connect more homes to NBN wireless
ABCNext week’s federal budget will include $480 million to improve regional internet speeds and allow more customers to access the NBN’s fixed wireless service. Key points: The federal government and NBN are promising $750 million to upgrade regional internet services The money will let more customers access fixed wireless services and faster internet speeds It is anticipated this will free up capacity on the NBN Sky Muster satellite service The NBN will spend an additional $270 million on the planned upgrade. “The upgrade will expand the fixed wireless footprint coverage by up to 50 per cent, enabling 120,000 additional premises to access fixed wireless services instead of Sky Muster satellite services,” Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said. “In addition, for regular Sky Muster, NBN is aiming to increase average monthly data allowances to 55 gigabytes, increasing to 90GB once the NBN Fixed Wireless upgrade is complete in around two and a half years.” Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said the extra funding was being announced as part of plans to help Australia become a top-10 data and digital economy by 2030.
