Here's why tomato prices are soaring in Chennai
India TodayThe skyrocketing prices of tomato in Chennai are burning a hole in the consumers' pockets and have added to the woes of people who are reeling under high inflation. The retail prices of tomatoes ranged between Rs 100 a kg and Rs 120 a kg in the city owing to a dip in the supply of tomatoes at the Koyambedu wholesale markets. TOMATO PRICES RISING IN CHENNAI The price of the essential vegetables, including tomatoes, are skyrocketing in Chennai due to a supply shortage at the Koyambedu wholesale market. Generally, the Koyambedu wholesale market receives nearly 500 tonnes of tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and from within the state. TOMATOES TO BE SOLD AT MINIMAL RATES The Tamil Nadu government has procured 4 tonnes of tomatoes which are being sold at minimal prices in ‘Pannai Pasumai Shops’, run by the cooperative department.
