Unveiling of controversial artwork to remember Cyclone Tracy after 50 years draws outcry from survivors

ABC

Lucio Matarazzo remembers the fear that swept his body as an 11-year-old boy when Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin and the enormity of watching his parents cry. Survivors disappointed over 50-year anniversary plans As Darwin approaches 50 years since Cyclone Tracy struck, Mr Matarazzo said events planned by the City of Darwin council didn't speak to him as "an old Darwin boy". Antony Bullock was 12 years old when the cyclone hit, and said the artwork didn't represent the experience of survivors, describing it as "deeply offensive". "It's going to be a constant negative reminder of how badly Cyclone Tracy survivors were treated by the council." Mr Bullock said the upcoming anniversary was making the cyclone "feel real again" for many survivors, with many unable to return to the city because of the trauma.
