This secret hike through California’s giant redwoods will take you to another world
LA TimesYou seem to be shrinking. Elevated walkways on Mill Creek Trail at the Grove of Titans help protect the trees’ roots and other plant life from pedestrians. As for the letter of the law, in most cases, it’s not illegal to hike off-trail in a California state park, but “disturbance or destruction” of natural scenery, plants and animal life “is strictly forbidden.” The park officials’ answer: Reroute an old trail to run through the grove — and build a quarter-mile elevated metal walkway that protects the most vulnerable forest floor from footprints while allowing sunlight and moisture in. From the Arcata/Eureka airport, it’s 70 driving miles north to Crescent City and the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park Visitor Center.
