Tamil Nadu CM writes to President Kovind seeking release of Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convicts
India TodayChief minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin has written to President of India, Ramnath Kovind, seeking early release of Nalini, Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalan, Jayakumar, Robert Payas and Ravichandran, who were convicted for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. CM Stalin stated that Nalini's original death sentence was commuted under Article 161 and Supreme Court commuted death sentence of other three convicts to life imprisonment. CM Stalin said that on 9th September 2018, Government of Tamil Nadu had recommended to the state governor for remission of the rest of the sentence of the seven convicts and their early release but the obstacle for exercise of the power of remission was the pendent of investigation by CBI's multi-disciplanary monitoring agency. I, therefore request the Honourable President to kindly accept the recommendation of the state government dated 9.9.2018 and pass appropriate orders to remit the life sentence of the seven convicts," stated Stalin.
