China has detected seven infections of the Covid subvariant JN.1, news agency Reuters has reported, citing the country's national disease control and prevention administration on Friday. As of December 8, the public health agency of the United States projects that the variant JN.1 makes up between 15–29% of the total cases in the United States. National Indian Medical Association COVID Task Force's co-chairman Dr Rajeev Jayadevan said that JN.1 may be a contributing factor to the recent surge in India's Covid cases, which currently stands at 1,296. “At this time, there is no evidence that JN.1 presents an increased risk to public health relative to other currently circulating variants,” it said.
