India's power output growth in 2024 slowest since pandemic: Report
India TodayElectricity generation in 2024 grew at its slowest pace since the Covid-19 pandemic, reflecting a broader economic slowdown, reported news agency Reuters, quoting data from Grid-India. “Electricity demand picked up in December with colder weather boosting heating system usage,” Sooraj Narayan, head of Asia-Pacific power modeling at Wood Mackenzie, told the news agency. “We expect a demand growth rate of 6% to 7% in 2025, supported by increased industrial activity.” Renewable energy contributed 12.1% of India’s total power generation in 2024, helping to reduce the share of coal to 74.4% from 75% in 2023. Despite this progress, renewable growth slowed, with solar output rising just 18.4%, the lowest rate since India’s 2015 climate commitments. Meanwhile, natural gas-fired power, which rose 17.3% last year, is expected to decline in 2025 due to higher projected gas prices, according to Energy Aspects senior LNG analyst Kesher Sumeet.
