New York TimesThe Australian and New Zealand football associations have written to FIFA for urgent clarification regarding Visit Saudi being a sponsor of this summer’s Women’s World Cup. “Football Australia understands FIFA has entered into a destination partnership agreement in respect to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023,” a Football Australia spokesperson told The Athletic. “Football Australia and New Zealand Football have jointly written to FIFA to urgently clarify the situation.” The chairman of Women in Football Australia, Bonita Mersiades, has called out the “hypocrisy” of such a deal. Mersiades told The Athletic: “The proposed Visit Saudi sponsorship of the Women’s World Cup is yet another example of FIFA’s and world football’s hypocrisy when it comes to their stated values versus where the money comes from.
