Why kids can prefer one parent (and tips for dealing with it)

For the proudly hands-on parent, they're the three most torturous words you can hear. The Chosen One "It's fairly common for little kids to have a preference for a particular parent," says child clinical psychologist Dr Erinn Hawkins. "Our second kid would switch between us – mummy for a week, daddy for a week – so there wasn't the same sense of jealousy, but I just had no patience for their little tricks." Little kids love one parent at a time Eventually, a child will be able to make sense of multiple relationships, says Dr Hawkins. "But when they're little, they just don't have the same cognitive skills that you or I have to be able to understand and hold relationships as separate entities," she says.
