Sacramento Republic’s MLS future in doubt: Why it happened and what comes next

Late Friday night, Sacramento mayor Darrell Steinberg released a written statement saying the city’s “quest for Major League Soccer is far from done.” “It took multiple stops and starts to keep the Kings. But multiple sources who have helped bring expansion teams into the league in the last five years characterized Friday’s news as a net positive for MLS. While multiple sources across NWSL don’t expect Friday’s MLS news to impact Sacramento’s attempt to join the women’s league, it does raise a major complication.
